The jersey, which was worn by Michael Jordan for the first game of the 1998 NBA Finals, was sold by Sotheby’s on Thursday, Reuters reported.

During the game, Jordan tallied up 33 points in 45 minutes, but the Chicago Bulls ended up losing to the Utah Jazz 88-85 on the road, CBS Sports reported.

The game was part of Jordan’s “Last Dance” season, ending with Jordan and the Chicago Bulls beating the Utah Jazz for the NBA title, ESPN reported.

Jordan earned his sixth and final NBA Championship ring and his sixth Finals MVP award that year, CBS Sports reported.

“In the weeks since we announced the auction, there’s been palpable excitement from not only sports fans, but collectors alike who are eager to own a rarefied piece of history,” Brahm Wachter told Reuters.

Wachter is Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables.

Jordan’s jersey beat out the previous record holder, Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey he wore during the 1986 World Cup, which was sold for $9.28 million, ESPN reported.

That auction was held in May, CBS Sports reported.

Before Maradona’s jersey, a Babe Ruth jersey that The Bambino wore from 1918-1920 sold for $5.64 million in 2019, according to ESPN.
