Recall alert: Listeria concerns prompt FDA to announce recall of some potatoes, citrus fruits

Potential listeria contamination prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to announce a voluntary recall Tuesday by Freshouse II LLC of lemons, limes, oranges and red potatoes.

“We voluntarily issued this recall out of an abundance of caution with the steadfast intent to minimize even the slightest risk to public health,” Freshouse President Jamey Friedman said in a statement.

According to an FDA statement, Salisbury, North Carolina-based Freshouse discovered Listeria monocytogenes on a piece of equipment at one of its packing facilities, and the recalled products were shipped directly to retailer distribution centers in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Meanwhile, wholesalers in Maryland and North Carolina also received direct shipments.

Affected products include Freshouse limes, Nature’s Promise Organic limes, Fresh From the Start red potatoes and lemons, Wegmans lemons and California Valencia oranges, CNN reported.

No illnesses linked to the potentially tainted products have been reported, the FDA stated.

Freshouse has since ceased production and distribution of the products and “are continually evaluating our cleaning and sanitation regimes,” CNN reported.
