Power of social media: Bracelet containing loved one’s ashes found in airport to be returned to woman

A woman in Arizona was hoping a Facebook post could get what she thought was a beloved piece of jewelry back to its rightful owner. Her hope came true.

Desiree Encinas found a bracelet in a restroom at Houston’s Hobby airport that appeared to contain the remains of someone in a heart-shaped charm with a fingerprint engraved on it. She knew it meant something to someone, so she posted a photo of the bracelet to Facebook to spread the word.

“I figured with the power of Facebook as well, that we can share it all over the world and see if we can get it back to its owner. I’m sure it means a lot to them,” Encinas told KTRK.

The post was shared all over the world.

Shara Fisher, who is from Illinois, was the owner of the bracelet, KPRC reported. She didn’t realize she had misplaced it until she took her watch off the next day.

Fisher said the bracelet had her mother’s ashes inside and her mother’s fingerprint on the outside. Her mother died on Christmas Eve and she didn’t have the bracelet for long.

She was talking to her daughter, Amber Crabtree, who lives in Houston, and while they were on the phone, Crabtree was scrolling through Facebook and noticed the post, telling her mother, “They found your bracelet.”

Fisher had been driving and was so emotional that she had to pull over when her daughter told her, KPRC reported.

Crabtree reached out to Encinas, and now Fisher plans to fly to Arizona next week to get her bracelet.

Fisher said the fact that Encinas is from Arizona is ironic because her mom always wanted to live there and she wanted her ashes scattered there, KTRK reported.

Fisher’s siblings will be going with her and will spread her mother’s ashes in Sedona, KPRC reported.
