Johnny Wayne Griffis, 48, is charged with distillation, or manufacture of prohibited liquors and beverages. He also faces a class C misdemeanor of sale, offer for sale, possession or barter of prohibited liquors and beverages, WEAR-TV reported.

According to the Tri-City Ledger, Griffis competed in the Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners Master Distiller” in 2020, and The Country Network’s new television series “Alabama Shine.”

The latter, which premiered in August, featured both Griffis and a moonshiner from Carbon Hill, Alabama. Griffis’ arrest stems from aired “Alabama Shine” footage of him discussing actively evading law enforcement during the moonshine distillation process, WEAR reported.

According to court records, Griffis was found in possession of mid-cook moonshine still at the time of his arrest. Records also indicate he was in possession of 19 quarts of flavored moonshine and 5 gallons of clear moonshine, the Ledger reported.

Griffis was released from the Escambia County Detention Center on a $3,000 bond Tuesday, according to the newspaper.

According to Alabama Code, Griffis faces one to five years in prison if convicted, WEAR reported.
