KPNX says on Friday, Donald Hayes, 74, contacted the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office after he got lost on Mingus Mountain and needed assistance. YCSO told him to stay where he was but searchers were unable to find him or his dog.

YCSO says its search and rescue teams found the body of Hayes days after he was reported missing. YCSO says he was found in a very rugged area that was not easy for searchers to get to but they found a way on Wednesday. When searchers finally located Hayes, they found Hayes’ dog, Ranger, who went with him on the hike. Ranger was alive and stayed with Hayes. KNXV says a volunteer checked him out in the area before they got him to a veterinarian for treatment.

“I thank all the volunteer search and rescue teams and others who gave of their time for six days to locate the victim and bring him home. Our searchers utilized every tool at their disposal to find Mr. Hayes and never gave up,” said YCSO Sheriff David Rhodes.

YCSO will be working with the medical examiner to determine how Hayes died, according to KPNX.
