Cheyenne Meadows, 21, faces 18 counts of first-degree attempted murder and 15 counts of second-degree attempted murder, records from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office show. He has also been charged with four counts of employment of a firearm with the intent to commit a felony, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of burglary and one count of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to WHBQ.

Officers arrested Meadows after responding around 3 a.m. Monday to a report of shots fired at Highland Meadows Apartments on Airways Boulevard, WHBQ reported. In an affidavit obtained by the news station, officers said they spotted Meadows in a pickup truck in the area and that he shot at officers standing between him and an apartment building before driving away on Airways Boulevard.

Officers took cover and broadcast a description of the car Meadows had been seen in, WHBQ reported. He was spotted a few blocks away and arrested following a traffic stop, according to the news station.

Authorities said they found an assault rifle lying on the car’s passenger’s seat when they approached, along with several spent shell casings found throughout the truck’s cab, WHBQ reported, citing an affidavit. Meadows later claimed the shell casings had been left after he shot at a fox earlier in the day, officials said.

As authorities investigated, several residents of Highland Meadows Apartments called to report that their apartments had been shot, according to WHBQ. Officers said they found several apartments riddled with bullet holes. Thirteen people were in the apartments at the time of the shootings, including two children, WHBQ reported.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the alleged shooting. Police continue to investigate.
