Landlord accused of breaking into apartment, punching officer

EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — A 71-year-old Maine man was arrested and charged with assault after he was accused of breaking into his own property and punching a police officer.

East Millinocket police were called to an apartment unit Sunday when a renter reported the homeowner had broken into their basement and tried screwing the door shut, WCSH reported.

Officials said the landlord, Hollis Hafford, tried to force them off the property.

Hafford, who displayed aggressive behavior, screamed and cursed at authorities and even hit one officer in the chest, WMTW reported.

When the officer tried to arrest Hafford, police said he punched the officer in the face and continued to resist arrest.

Hafford was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Penobscot County Jail. He was charged with assault on a police officer and stalking. Officials said additional charges of refusing to submit to arrest and obstructing government administration may be added.

In January, Hafford was found not guilty on charges of engaging a prostitute. In 2001, he was convicted of unlawful sexual contact involving a University of Maine student, WGME reported.
