Ex-Piggly Wiggly employee who robbed Florida store twice sentenced

A former employee at a Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Florida was sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing the store twice.

Maurice Montraye Ervin, 27, of Atmore, Alabama, was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison, followed by three years of probation, the Pensacola News Journal reported.

Ervin previously pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery and grand theft, the newspaper reported.

Ervin was working at a Piggly Wiggly in Walnut Hill when he stole more than $900 from the store. Surveillance cameras caught Ervin taking the money from the store’s office, causing him to be fired, the Atmore News reported.

On Dec. 4, Ervin returned to the same Piggly Wiggly, wearing a mask and carrying a firearm, the News Journal reported. According to Escambia County prosecutors, Ervin pointed a gun at a clerk and then robbed the safe.

According to the Atmore News, Ervin stole more than $6,700.

Although Ervin’s face was concealed under the mask, the clerk said she recognized his voice, the News Journal reported. Ervin later admitted to both thefts, the newspaper reported.

Ervin was charged with one count each of robbery with a firearm and first-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the Atmore News reported.
