Coronavirus: 85 positive cases linked to Michigan restaurant

EAST LANSING, Mich. — A Michigan restaurant has been linked to 85 positive cases of the coronavirus and patrons are being asked to take self-quarantine measures, health officials said Saturday.

The number of cases linked to Harper’s Restaurant and Brewpub in East Lansing spiked from the original number of 34 reported Wednesday, Linda S. Vail of the Ingham County Health Department told CNN.

Health Department officials are asking patrons who visited the restaurant between June 8 and June 20 to self-quarantine and report cases of COVID-19, the Lansing State Journal reported.

“Given the number of cases in this outbreak, we consider this a higher risk exposure than a typical visit to a restaurant or bar,” Vail said in a statement. “There are likely more people infected with COVID-19 not yet identified.”

Most people are showing mild symptoms and have not been hospitalized, WILX reported. At least 10 are asymptomatic.

Harper’s closed Monday, the television station reported. The business opened its doors on June 8, the day Michigan bars and restaurants were allowed to reopen as long as safety measures such as limited capacity were taken, according to the State Journal.

Harper’s opened at 50% capacity that day, the restaurant said on its Facebook page.

Eighty patrons who tested positive went to Harper’s between June 12 and June 20, the State Journal reported. Five are “secondary infections,” meaning the patrons were exposed by someone who went to the bar.

Owners of the business decided to close down temporarily to install air purifiers and to eliminate lines, according to its Facebook page.
