Broadway theaters in New York to drop mask mandate in July

NEW YORK — All 41 Broadway theaters in New York City will switch to a “mask optional” policy starting July 1.

According to WABC-TV, The Broadway League – the national trade association for the Broadway industry – said that the new policy will be re-evaluated every month.

“Audience masking protocols for August and beyond will be evaluated on a monthly basis as we continue to monitor the science and will be announced in mid-July,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, said.

The Broadway League encouraged audience members to still wear masks in theaters.

Last month most Broadway theaters lifted the requirement that audience members provide proof of vaccination to enter venues.

Producers have long complained that ticket sales may be depressed due to the mask ban, according to the Associated Press.
