Kentucky State Police said a trooper tried to stop a car driving carelessly on Interstate 75 south just before 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday. In a news release, KSP said the suspect’s vehicle stopped when troopers activated lights and sirens, but when the troopers approached the car, the driver sped away.

KSP said the vehicle led police on a chase at a high rate of speed through three counties. Troopers said the suspect’s vehicle struck several KSP vehicles.

The vehicle was stopped when troopers used an intervention to disable the vehicle. Troopers identified the driver as David Maurice Reed, 54, of St. Petersburg, Florida.

When police looked inside Reed’s vehicle, they found the body of a dead woman. On Thursday, police identified the woman as Rachel Louise Carder, 53, of Huntington, West Virginia. Police said that while “the cause of death is undetermined at this time … foul play is suspected.”

“We’re trying to find out where this crime happened at — whether it happened on the interstate or if it happened in another county or another state,” Kentucky State Police Post 11 public affairs officer Scottie Pennington told The Times-Tribune. “That’s the thing that the troopers and other investigators are trying to put together.”

Reed faces a list of charges, including murder, tampering with physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, careless driving and fleeing police.
