No other injuries were reported.
The incident began at around 5:40 p.m. local time Saturday when an estimated five shots were fired inside a fourth-floor guest room, and the gunman reportedly shot through the room’s door when hotel security responded, Honolulu police Capt. Brian Lynch told the TV station.
In the aftermath of the first shots, the hotel’s management issued a statement acknowledging the situation that prompted the evacuation of the immediate area and the lockdown of the resort.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred last night on our property, and we are focused on supporting our guests and employees at this time,” the hotel said in a statement issued Sunday and obtained by CNN.
