Accuretic: Pfizer recalls blood pressure drug due to potential carcinogen

Pfizer Inc. is recalling a blood pressure drug due to elevated levels of a potential cancer-causing impurity.

Pfizer announced Monday that it is recalling Accuretic and two other versions of the drug – Quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets – because nitrosamine, an impurity that could cause cancer.

Nitrosamine can be found in processed foods, medicines and other products as unintentional by-products of preparation and processing, according to ScienceDirect.com.

According to the company, the recall is voluntary, and Pfizer has not received any reports of adverse events related to the drug.

Pfizer suggests that those taking the drugs can also consult with their healthcare provider or pharmacy to determine if they have the affected product.

Patients with the affected product should call 888-843-0247, Mon.-Fri. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. ET, for instructions on how to return their product and get a refund.
