1 injured after Tesla slams into home in California, driver at large

COVINA, Calif. — Authorities in California are searching for a driver who led police on a brief chase Saturday before crashing into the garage of a home in Covina, leaving one person injured, according to multiple reports.

California Highway Patrol officials said that, around 9:20 p.m. Saturday, an officer attempted to stop a Tesla Model 3 driver traveling in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 on suspicion of reckless driving, according to KTLA and The Mercury News. The officer initiated a chase, but ended it a short while later after the sedan’s driver took an exit off the interstate at about 90 mph, KTLA reported.

Sgt. Camrin Servio told the news station that officers noticed debris on streets in the area and learned that the Tesla driver had crashed into the garage of a home near the intersection of Workman and Hollenbeck avenues.

The homeowners told KTLA the Tesla struck a utility pole before missing the room they were sleeping in and slamming into two cars in their driveway and hitting a third car inside their garage. The driver ran from the crash, leaving behind an injured woman believed to be a passenger in the vehicle, KTLA reported. Officials told the News that the woman, who was not identified, suffered “moderate injuries.”

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
