Teen was sleeping in fatal fire near New Bremen

Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag said his investigator reports there were five people at the camper, but three of them had gone to get something to eat.

Homan and another individual remained in the camper and the other individual was either not in the camper or was able to get out when the fire occurred.

Freytag said the preliminary cause of death for Homan is smoke inhalation, but results from toxicology tests aren’t expected to be ready for three months.

According to a release from the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, the camper was parked in a field off Southland Road east of County Road 66A.

The investigation so far indicates there was a gathering of five people at the camper and the victim was sleeping at the time of the fire, according to the release.

The emergency call came in at 1:12 a.m. and crews remained at the scene until about 6 a.m., according to the release.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The sheriff’s office, the St. Marys Twp. Fire Department, county coroner and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating.


A 19-year-old from New Bremen perished in an overnight fire.

WHIO’s Steve Baker reports that Ben P. Homan died in the fire reported just before 1:15 a.m. Sunday on Southland Road in St. Marys Twp.

St. Marys Twp. Fire Chief Chad Hicks said the fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal because it involves a fatality.

Hicks said the structure was engulfed when crews arrived, and that crews remained on scene until about 6 a.m.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Gilberg Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen.
