The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry has deployed a wildfire crew to Alaska.

The 20-person team is helping to fight wildfires caused by lightning, which have burned 45,000-acres, and to protect nearby cabins and villages.

“Our state’s team of firefighters and support staff are well-trained for wildfire situations, and we are always willing to extend a helping hand to other states in need,” Chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry Dan Balser said.

The team, which includes 10 ODNR employees and 10 members from other agencies and fire departments, is scheduled to stay in Alaska for two weeks but that could be extended depending on the conditions.

Last year, Ohio’s wildfire crews responded to assignments in Oregon, Texas, Utah and Colorado.
