5,000 pigs die in massive Ohio barn fire

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ohio — Firefighters from five counties, including Greene County, battled a massive barn fire Tuesday at a hog farm in southwest Fayette County that killed approximately 5,000 pigs.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m. at the Straathoff Swine Farm, 7111 Old Route 35SE in Wayne Twp.

The fire spread quickly through the facility, causing intense heat and extremely heavy smoke, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire on Old 35 is being fought by 13 Fire agencies from Fayette, Pickaway, Ross, Highland, and Greene, counties. Also at the scene are Fayette Co EMS, EMA and multiple support agencies including citizens.

One member of the fire service suffered an arm injury and was taken to Fayette County Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and agents from the State Fire Marshal’s Office are responding to conduct an investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
