Solstice this Saturday brings the end of spring, beginning of summer

MIAMI VALLEY — Spring will come to an end this Saturday, June 20th and we will welcome summer at 5:43 pm.

>> Showers and storms develop tonight; heavy rain, gusty winds possible

The Earth’s Northern Hemisphere will be tilted towards the sun. The sun reaches the highest position in the sky at noontime and the summer solstice will occur when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer.

It will be the longest day of the year and a great time to enjoy the most daylight! The total day length will be 14 hours and 59 minutes.

Did you know sunset times will be longer within the coming weeks? On Saturday night, sunset will be at 9:09 pm. In fact, sunsets will continue to be around 9:09 pm through June.

However, after the summer solstice, we will slowly see a decrease in daylight. By July 31st, sunset will be around 8:50 pm and by the end of August, we will see sunset times around 8:08 pm.

As the Northern Hemisphere ushers in summer, the Southern Hemisphere will welcome winter.
