Season’s 1st snowfall may be days away

One year ago today, nearly three inches of snow fell across Southwest Ohio and the Miami Valley.

The chance to see our first snow this season is this weekend.

While the setup is not favorable for any measurable snowfall, a few flakes may fly on Saturday.

The average date of the first measurable snowfall in Dayton will come on Saturday (Nov. 21). We have seen snow much earlier, with the earliest recorded on Oct. 18, 1989.

We average about 1.5 inches of snow by Dec. 1. For the record, November 1950 was the snowiest ever, with 12.7 inches of snow.

We’ll likely see mainly rain here this weekend, as temperatures are expected to be well above freezing, but a pool of cold air will work its way in behind the front.

If there is any lingering moisture, a few wet snowflakes could fall but it won’t be enough to accumulate as the soil temperature is too warm.

This system is something that the StormCenter 7 Weather team will keep a close eye on. Keep checking back for the latest forecast at whio.com.
