Scam Alert: Prosecutor’s office warns of scam call circulating in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY — The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office has learned of a new scam call circulating around the county telling people they have been linked to a criminal case.

A local corrections officer received a phone call telling her that she had been linked to a Montgomery County criminal case, said the prosecutor’s office.

The officer was given a case number and was told to call immediately, since she had not yet been charged in the case.

Officials say the caller identified herself as Elizabeth Thomas from the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, but the corrections officer recognized things that were incorrect in the caller’s information and realized it was a scam.

The prosecutor’s office has provided a few tips on how to handle this type of scam call:

  • If you receive a call from a person claiming to be from the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office and that person instructs you to call a toll free number, do not do so. Our office will never instruct you to call a toll free number. (Area codes 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, or 888) If you want to contact our office, call the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office main line at (937) 225-5757.
  • The Montgomery County Common Pleas Court’s case numbers are in the following format, XXXX-CR-XXXX. The first four numbers are the year the case was initiated. If any other format case number is left on your message, it may be a scam.
  • If you think you are being scammed call the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Consumer Fraud Unit at 937-225-4747 and ask for a fraud investigator.
