Family unhurt, dog killed in Springfield fire

A Springfield family escaped a house fire without injury, but their small dog was killed early this morning.

Flames spread from a garage to the back of the home in the 1500 block of Highland Avenue around 4:40 a.m.

Firefighters say it’s at least the fourth garage fire they’ve responded to in the neighborhood recently. Investigators are working to determine the cause.

They say the heat was so intense it burned through a power line and caused extensive damage to the home.

The Red Cross is helping the couple and their adult daughter.
