Mega Millions jackpot third largest in game’s history at $415M

The Mega Millions jackpot is estimated to get up to $415 million, the third highest in the game’s history, by Friday night’s drawing and lottery fever is beginning to grip the area.

Katrina Johnson said she does not play the lottery regularly. But she was at Bee-Gee’s Minit Market in Kettering, one of the area’s top lottery ticket sellers, buying tickets Wednesday.

She picks her numbers based on birthdays, “like my kids’ birthdays, my birthday, and my fiancé’s birthday,” Johnson said.

Michael Sliger, Bee-Gee’s manager, says there is an increase in people buying tickets when the jackpot gets up to a higher amount. “We get a lot of people come in who don’t typically play, a lot of office pools and things like that. Everyone wants to come in and take a chance on the big money,” Sliger said.

Friday’s prize will be the biggest offered since Dec. 17, 2013 when the jackpot was $648 million. Two winning tickets were sold, one each in California and Georgia.

According to the official Mega Millions' site, no winners correctly matched all six numbers in the June 28 drawing with that jackpot estimated at $390 million.
