DALLAS — A teen shot during a high school basketball game in Dallas died Saturday, and assault charges against the shooter have been upgraded to murder, authorities said.

According to Dallas police, Marc Strickland, 18, died at 2:59 p.m. Saturday. Strickland was shot in the chest by a 15-year-old boy around 9:10 p.m. Jan. 11 during a game between South Oak Cliff and Kimball high schools at Ellis Davis Field House, WFAA reported

Police said a fight broke out in the stands and shots were fired, the television station reported. Strickland was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, KTVT reported.

Strickland, a student at Dallas Can Academy, died shortly after being taken off life support Saturday afternoon, KDFW reported.

According to Dallas police, the 15-year-old turned himself in at police headquarters, where he originally was charged with aggravated assault. Two persons of interest -- also juveniles -- will not be charged, police said.
