3-Alarm fire destroys home, business near Arcanum

ARCANUM, Ohio — UPDATE: April 28 @ 2pm

Authorities in Darke County said a 3-alarm fire outside Arcanum on Tuesday destroyed a structure that was home to a family.

Firefighters were called just before 3 p.m. to the 3600 block of State Route 49 after getting calls of a large fire. Mutual aid from multiple neighboring departments were called to the scene.

According to our news partners at AIM Media, heavy smoke and flames were visible from structure and other nearby exposures. Multiple sources told News Center 7 the structure that burned was part residence while the other part was used as a plumbing business.

Fire investigators said the fire likely started from a woodpile that was behind the barn and then spread to other nearby structures. The flames damaged a fence and a deck that was attached to another home on the property.

High winds helped fuel the flames and caused embers to blow to homes across Route 49 and even started a field fire.

AIM Media reports the residence and business, along with two vehicles and plumbing supplies were a complete loss. People who live in the area have reported minor property and smoke damage as a result of the fire, AIM Media reports.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
