Ex-WPAFB contractor sentenced for having missile warning system

DAYTON — A Greene County man who was a former military subcontractor at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was sentenced on federal charges for possessing a missile warning system and an illegal firearm silencer, according to the Department of Justice.

Joel Montgomery, 50, was sentenced to 33 months in prison and three years of supervised released Friday in federal court.

Montgomery pleaded guilty in December 2019 on charges of possessing a silencer not registered to him and retaining United States property, valued over $1,000.

Montgomery was indicted on the charges in 2017, which were connected to search warrants executed in 2015 at his house on Schnebly Road near Spring Valley.

Investigators first found Montgomery was illegally possessing a silencer during a search of his house in June 2015, according to the DOJ.

A second search in October 2015 found Montgomery illegally had “an AN/AAR-47 Missile Warning System” that had been stolen, according to records.

Federal investigators alleged Montgomery did not return equipment that was government property after his WPAFB contract expired.
