Winter weather strikes the Miami Valley, other areas

The Miami Valley wasn't the only area that saw a snowy Christmas or bitter cold temperatures this week.

>>Chilly afternoon with chance for snow near week’s end

“Erie, Pa. has had 63.8-inches of snowfall since Christmas Eve,” Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini said. “That is more snow than the Dayton International Airport has received in the last three years. Erie has had up to 99-inches of snow this month, which is the record for the most snowfall for December.”

Cold, arctic air arrived across most of the United States Wednesday morning and clear skies caused the Miami Valley to have frigid temperatures, Zontini said.

Some colder areas:

  • Rockford: minus 6 degrees
  • College Corner: minus 5 degrees
  • Bellefontaine: minus 4 degrees
  • Germantown: minus 4 degrees
  • Springfield: minus 2 degrees
  • Dayton International Airport: minus 2 degrees

>>When were we THIS cold?

“The Dayton International Airport reached minus 2 degrees for the first time since February 2015 and almost reached the record of minus 4 degrees,” according to Zontini.

Minnesota dropped to a record low of minus 36 degrees Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.

South Florida was maintaining temperatures in the 70s this morning.
