Will a ‘tick explosion’ happen in the Miami Valley this summer?

MIAMI VALLEY — While some parts of the country are preparing for an increased tick population this summer, the Miami Valley may be one of the lucky areas that doesn’t see the same impact.

Our team of Storm Center 7 meteorologists say the multiple weeks of freezing weather this year will help cut down on the local tick population. Even though locally we may see less ticks than other areas, public health officials still suggest caution when walking outdoors during tick season, which begins in May.

News Center 7's Caroline Reinwald spoke with a local environmental health director to find out what we can do to stay safe during tick season.

Jeff Webb, environmental health director at Greene County Public Health Department, says, " You generally pick up ticks from being in tall grassy areas." He also stated, If you stick to sidewalks you're generally going to be good.
