What to do if you find the boa constrictor slithering in Springfield

CLARK COUNTY — With the shed skin of a boa constrictor found on a bike path in Springfield last week, Clark County officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for the possibly loose snake.

The snake is not a threat to people, according to Tim Harrison, director for Outreach for Animals. Harrison, who has decades of experience with foreign animals, told NewsCenter 7’s John Bedell that the snake will only become a threat if you try to catch or kill it, both, he says, you should not do. He advised that what you should do is call for help.

"Use your cell phone,” Harrison said. “Call us, or call the officials you have in the city of Springfield. They'll contact us. We'll come and rescue that snake. Because it's not the snake's fault it's here, and that's what we're about.”

>>WEATHER: Strong to severe storms expected today; tornadoes, high winds, hail possible

Outreach for Animals is a organization of police officers, firefighters and paramedics committed to being the goodwill ambassador and liaison between humans and animals, according to their website.

Harrison believes the boa was likely someone’s pet and escaped. He also said the snake is likely within a quarter to a half-mile radius from where the skin was found; but inclement weather may hide the snake from sight as strong to severe storms are expected to hit the Miami Valley Friday.

“We want to rescue him and get him to a good place," Harrison said. If you see the boa, call the Outreach for Animals at 937-436-0727, or Springfield Ohio Animal Control at 937-750-8727.
