Volunteers, firefighters fill 1,000 sandbags in New Madison

NEW MADISON — Emergency crews in the Darke County village of New Madison said nearly 300 volunteers and firefighters from seven departments filled a thousands sandbags over the weekend.

The sandbags were placed in the village after about 10 inches of rain fell Thursday through Sunday.

This caused flooding in the area of South Main and Arnold streets.

Heavy rains also flooded the Tri-Village High School football field. However, water did not reach the school buildings.

Not knowing what weather to expect later in the week as the East Coast prepares for Hurricane Florence to make landfall, New Madison is expected to leave the sandbags in place until the end of the week.
