Veteran’s dog beaten to death in Dayton

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 1:25 p.m. (April 8)

The girlfriend of a veteran who blamed her for the death of his Chihuahua said the dog was not a PTSD dog and was aggressive.

“I was defending myself from a vicious dog,” Laura Bailey said.

The 5-pound Chihuahua named Angel first attacked her Dec. 19, 2017, Bailey said. March 31 was the first time she sought medical treatment because she couldn’t get one of the wounds to stop bleeding, said Bailey, who added that she is now taking antibiotics after it became infected.

“I felt her go through my hand,” she said. “I literally had to use all of my strength to pry her jaws from my hand.”

She said her boyfriend, David Moore, was aware of the earlier incidents and said Angel also tried to attack him before.

She said she did throw Angel against the wall, but that the dog continued to try to attack her.

David Moore, 27, said his 5-pound, 14-month-old Chihuahua named Angel was allegedly beaten March 31 by his live-in girlfriend.

He spent $1,500 trying to save her after finding her severely injured on the kitchen floor with a broken broom nearby, but his pet did not survive, he said.

Police spoke to Moore’s girlfriend, Laura Bailey, who told them Angel bit her, according to a Dayton police report. She went to the emergency room at Miami Valley Hospital, where she told officers she threw the dog against the wall and hit the dog once with a broom handle.

She denied abuse claims and said it was Moore who was hurting Angel, the report stated.

She has not been charged but Moore said Dayton prosecutors are expected to pursue animal cruelty charges.
