Tropical Storm Gordon expected to strengthen to Category 1 hurricane

Tropical Storm Gordon is expected to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday before moving back over land sometime at night, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini. This system is gaining strength across the Gulf of Mexico before it makes landfall in the lower Mississippi Valley tonight. Tropical storm warnings and hurricane warnings stretch from southeast Louisiana to the far western portion of the Florida panhandle.

Heavy rainfall and dangerous storm surge will impact areas near and east of the center of Gordon. Very heavy rainfall will also be widespread. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle could see four to eight inches of rain. Hurricane force winds will be felt near the landfall site, and tropical storm force winds stretch about 60 miles from the center.

Gordon will rapidly weaken over land for the end of the work week. The leftovers could bring a chance for rain and some wind to the Miami Valley towards the end of the weekend. The timing and strength of this lingering low pressure system will likely change towards the weekend, so check back with the Storm Center 7 team for the latest.
