A woman who identified herself to News Center 7’s Sean Cudahy as the mother of the accused, said her son brought the knife to the courts at Lohrey Recreation Center to slash the other boy’s tires, not to hurt him. She said there is some history between her son and the victim.

She also said police have interviewed her son.

Dayton police have not responded to our request for information or comment about this incident.

The 17-year-old victim was taken to a hospital, suffering from what an adult who called 9-1-1 described as a stomach wound.

Police and a medic unit were dispatched to the center, 2366 Glenarm Ave., about 6:40 p.m. Thursday on a report of a stabbing at the outdoor basketball courts.

The adult who called 9-1-1 helped tend to the victim and interviewed him as well as other young people who were playing ball when the incident occurred. The caller told the emergency dispatcher he didn't see the stabbing or the attacker witnesses said was 13 years old.

"I guess the young man took the knife with him when he ran," the caller told the emergency dispatcher.

"How old are you?" he asks the victim.

"17," the boy said.

"What's your name?" the caller asks.

"Muhammad."

"What's your last name?" the caller asks.

"Really?" the caller answered before relaying the information to the emergency dispatcher. "His name is Muhammad Ali."

In the 9-1-1 call, the other young people at the center told the caller Muhammad was among a group playing basketball when the accused teenager slashed a tire on Muhammad's bicycle.

The other teenager stabbed Muhammad when he confronted the other teenager, the caller told the emergency dispatcher, relaying what the other youngsters told him.

One of the boys who identified himself as a witness said the two combatants were wrestling on the ground when the one boy was stabbed. The witness, who spoke on the condition he not be identified by name, said he thinks the knife was in a bag carried by the boy who cut the bike tire.

“I was kind of freaking out ‘cause I didn’t know what to do,” the witness said.
