Teen in Dayton Amber Alert case sentenced

DAYTON — A 15-year-old girl who admitted she took a 9-month-old baby from a Dayton home last month, prompting an Amber Alert, will avoid juvenile prison assuming she completes a treatment program, court officials said.

The teen appeared Monday before Judge Anthony Capizzi to learn her sentence after she admitted to charges of felony kidnapping and misdemeanor theft.  As part of the deal, the other charges against her were dismissed.

The baby, I’Zyion Reese, and the teen were found around 11:15 a.m. Oct. 8 in the 1800 block of North Main Street, more than eight hours after they had gone missing, according to police.

“There’s nothing more traumatic than a child missing. Especially a 9-month-old who has absolutely no way of communicating or caring for itself,” said Lt. Jason Hall of the Dayton Police Department.

The 15-year-old will have to complete a treatment program at the Montgomery County Center for Adolescent Services, which is a secure facility near New Lebanon. If she fails to complete the treatment, she will have to serve a year at the Department of Youth Services.

The baby’s mother said Reese was the youngest of her four children.

The teen was staying at a home in the 3000 block of Haberer Avenue overnight, when she took the child without the family’s permission around 3 a.m. Oct. 8, Hall said.

The mother of the child said the teen and her brother stay at her apartment with her four kids. She said they let the teen stay with them to be nice.

Around 3 a.m., the mother said the teen stole her brother’s cellphone, took the baby and left.

The mother said she wasn’t aware of the baby being missing until she woke up at 7 a.m.
