Students create quilt to celebrate Black History Month

Students celebrated Black History Month by creating a “Freedom Quilt” honoring the Underground Railroad at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Elementary School.

The Lincoln Promise Community Learning Center, an after school program, found a unique way to celebrate the month by having each student make their own square to celebrate the quest for freedom, according to Communications Supervisor Cherie Moore.

According to Program Director Marilyn Gadd, the quilt bridges the gap between the past and future for Black History Month.

“It’s our hope that this quilt will bring a little more joy, a little more connection and a whole lot more unity to our community,” Gadd said.

Gadd said she believes using creative methods like this help students understand the importance of history in a fun way.

The Lincoln Promise Community Learning Center meet each day in small groups with community instructors and is funded by the 21st Century After School program, according to Moore.
