Springfield crew working to determine cause of East First Street house fire

UPDATE @ 5:23 p.m.: Firefighters are working to determine what caused a fire that damaged a house on East First Street that was being rehabbed, a Springfield battalion chief said.

There were no injuries from the fire, believed to have started near the front door at 128 E. First St., the chief said, noting there were workers inside when the fire was reported.

Flames made their way into the void of one of the walls and spread quickly to the attic. Arriving crews spotted smoke coming from the attic, the chief said.

The chief said the fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage and is not considered suspicious.

INITIAL REPORT

Crews have been dispatched to the 100 block of East First Street on a report of a working structure fire.

Springfield firefighters were called out just after 4 p.m.
