Snow days: Why a day off school doesn’t always result in a makeup day

Snow days don’t always mean that students will have a shorter summer vacation.

With the switch from day-based to hour-based schedules in 2014, Ohio schools no longer have to schedule makeup days as long as they reach the minimum hours of instruction.

The Ohio Department of Education set the minimum hours of instruction at:

  • 455 hours for half-day kindergarten
  • 910 hours for full-day kindergarten through sixth grade
  • 1,001 hours for grades seven through 12

Schools can schedule extra hours to the year to keep from falling below the minimum number of instruction hours.

Any hours above the minimum do not have to be made up.

Per state policy, schools can use blizzard bags for up to three days each year.
