We received reports this afternoon of the following:

  • Pea-sized ice pellets in Centerville
  • Sleet in Casstown in Miami County
  • Small ice pellets in Waynesville in Warren County

Why we are seeing ice pellets or graupel?

Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini said an upper level low over the Great Lakes is spinning and keeping the energy around for isolated showers as well as cold air in the upper levels of the atmosphere over the Miami Valley.

“If you noticed. the afternoon downpours are very hit or miss. As the clouds broke up earlier this morning, the sun heated up the ground where the skies were clear and this allowed for the air to warm and rise. That rising motion created more clouds and showers in the holes.

“The instability or energy from the sunshine is allowing the showers to produce a slightly stronger updraft. The cold air that is in place above us allowed for ice pellets to form in some of the stronger showers this afternoon,” Zontini said.
