Six semi-trailer crashes have occurred in the Miami Valley over one week period

A semi-trailer rolled off of I-675 in Fairborn and landed alongside Spangler Road Tuesday.

The Fairborn accident marks the sixth semi related crash in the Miami Valley since June 30. Similar incidents over the week include a jackknife at I-75 and State Route 4, a tipping on 75 and 35, a double semi collision on 70 West, and another collision involving a car on 75 North.

A sixth accident resulted in the death of a driver during a collision at Needmore and Webster.

In general, The Ohio Department of Transportation says it analyzes crash reports from law enforcement agencies all over the state. When the agency finds patterns in the locations and causes of crashes, they look for ways to reduce the risk of crashes in those areas. One example is the engineering changes made at the I-70 and I-75 interchange in recent years.

Crash reports from that interchange in northern Montgomery County indicated that all kinds of semi drivers were rolling their big rigs while speeding on the series of ramps there. Because of that, ODOT came up with engineering solutions to address the issue.

“In response, we’ve added signage, we’ve added some flashing lights to further alert truckers that this is a ramp where we really need you to slow down and adhere to the speed limit,” Matt Bruning, ODOT Press Secretary said. “That has seemed to have made a difference.”

ODOT is not making any changes in response to the rash of semi crashes in the Dayton-area since June 30. The wrecks have been located across our viewing area and there does not appear to be a common thread between the wrecks.

News Center 7 asked state troopers if wrecks involving semis are on the rise locally, they said they’d have to pull some crash numbers and get back to us.

When we get that data from the state patrol, we’ll bring you any new information we learn from those numbers.
