Sidney residents given opportunity to win free tree during new lottery

SIDNEY — The city of Sidney is offering people a chance to get a free tree planted in their yard this summer.

Through an opt-in lottery drawing, residents in Sidney will have the chance to win a tree.

The idea for the program was partially influenced by the addition of new development in the city that do not have very many trees.

Additionally, arborist Brian Green saw a similar program in another town and brought it to the city.

Trees have been a point of pride in Sidney. The city is the 20th in Ohio to be named a Sterling Tree City.

Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst told News Center 7′s James Rider that he hopes the lottery can act as promotion within the city to continue beautifying the area.

“The hope would be that people see what can happen and then take it upon themselves to purchase more trees to populate the tree lawns,” Barhorst said.

Anyone interested can enter the lottery here.

The deadline to enter the lottery is June 30. Winners will be drawn August 6.
