Suspected OD victim awakes, causes 2 vehicle crashes in Riverside

UPDATE @ 6:25 p.m.: Police think the man taken into custody on Old Troy Pike in Riverside, after running from them, caused two vehicle accidents after he awoke from what they believe was an overdose.

Dayton police Lt. Christopher Malson said police and a medic unit were dispatched on a "person down call" at gas station in the 3400 block of Needmore Road.

Police and paramedics believed the initial call involved an overdose and were working to get the man out of a four-door Ford Taurus, to administer drugs and first aid, when he came to and put the sedan in drive.

"They didn't have time to give him any Narcan," Malson said. The man sped from the gas station, narrowly missing police and the paramedics who were trying to attend to him.

"The officers and paramedics had to get out of the way of the vehicle to avoid getting hit," the lieutenant said.

The man caused a two-vehicle accident on Needmore Road after leaving the gas station, continued east and  caused a second two-vehicle collision at Needmore and Old Troy Pike. One person was taken to a hospital from that second accident.

The man then got out of the sedan and ran south on Old Troy Pike, through cornfields, until he was captured in the 4200 block, Malson said.

Malson said the hospital will have to determine whether the man had been using drugs before police and paramedics arrived at the gas station.

Police likely will pursue charges of felonious assault and failure to comply with the signal or order of a police officer, Malson said. Other charges are likely once all the officers and paramedics involved write up their incident reports.
