Bellefontaine man killed in U.S. 68 crash in Champaign County

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — A 22-year-old Bellefontaine man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 68 near Grimes Field airport.

Deputies shut down both directions of U.S. 68 north of Urbana in Champaign County after the deadly, rollover crash.

The car the 22-year-old was driving crossed the center line for an unknown reason and avoided hitting a tow truck before crashing into a Dodge Ram pickup, deputies said. The Bellefontaine man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The crash happened around 2:10 p.m.

The driver of the truck, Bruce Towler, 78, was taken to a local hospital by medic and his passenger, Barbara Towler, 76, was flown to an area hospital by medical helicopter. Their conditions were not immediately known.

After the initial impact, Towler’s pickup truck rolled before coming to a stop on the west side of the road, deputies said.

The 22-year-old’s car came to a stop in the middle of the road.

A cause of the crash is still under investigation.
