‘Shootout’ near Yellow Springs could have been ambush, Greene County sheriff says

The shooting on Grinnell Road that left a man and woman dead could have been a possible ambush, Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer said, but authorities have not established a motive.

One of the victims was the ex-wife of the male homeowner who shot her in an exchange of gunfire in or near the driveway of the home in the 3400 block of Grinnell Road, according to Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer.

“I’ve not seen anything like this,” Fischer said.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a man with a gun approached a vehicle as it pulled into the driveway of the home was shot in an exchange of gunfire by the male homeowner who was in that vehicle.

The male homeowner was a passenger in the vehicle and has a CCW permit, the sheriff said.

The ex-wife of the homeowner drove up to the scene soon after the first shooting. She was armed with a gun and was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the male homeowner, Fischer said.

The names of the three people involved have not been released.

Authorities have recovered three firearms and are awaiting a search warrant to enter the house and the vehicles.

A local resident said she knew the gunfire wasn’t related to hunting when she heard yelling. She said she heard four gunshots that sounded like they came from a large gun.

“People shoot guns in the Glen all the time, but it’s past hunting season it was a big gun and went on for several seconds, and the yelling,” she said. “It was clear there was some kind of personal conflict.”

The shooting was reported around 11:10 a.m.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to the scene.

Two people who live at the house were not injured, Fischer said.

Deputies believe there may be surveillance video of the shooting, Fischer said.

“I would not expect us to have a shootout on Grinnell Road in the middle of a cornfield in Yellow Springs,” the resident said.
