Report: Bank robber asked to open new account before demanding money

SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE @ 2:40 p.m. (Jan. 4): 

New details and surveillance photos have been released following a Wednesday morning bank robbery in Springfield.

A Springfield police report says police were dispatched to the Fifth Third Bank at 20 S. Tuttle Road at around 9:30 a.m. The dispatch advised the suspect was a black male possibly in his late 20s wearing a black jacket and red hat, according to the police report.

“Dispatch advised that the suspect left the scene in an unknown direction,” the report says. “Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.”

Officers said bank employees told them the suspect first asked for information about opening a new account, according to the report. When a bank employee told him that they could help, he handed over a green folder, the report says.

“When he opened the green folder there was a piece of notebook paper on top,” the report says. “The piece of paper had a hand written not stating ‘No alarm will shoot everybody give me the money now.’”

The suspect did get money from the bank but the report does not say how much.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Police are investigating a bank robbery that occurred at a Fifth Third branch in Springfield Wednesday morning.

The robbery happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Fifth Third Bank location at 20 South Tuttle Road, according to dispatchers.

Dispatchers said additional details were not immediately available.
