A woman said she was riding with her daughter southbound on Ohio 741 near Cox Arboretum about 7:40 p.m. Monday night in the area where the crash later occurred when they saw someone in the center lane of the road waving his hands.

“It was shocking,” said Jennifer Bush of West Carrollton. “He sort of jumped in front of my daughter’s car and she had to swerve to avoid hitting him.”

Her daughter said the man had dark clothing and was waving his hand “walking toward vehicles.”

The daughter said she did not get the impression he was seeking help and said she had to move into the right lane to avoid hitting him.

“That was the only way I was able to not hit him because I was able to swerve,” the daughter said. “He was walking toward my truck.”

“It wasn’t like he was on the side of the street. He was in the middle of the street,” she said.

Bush said she then called police and later heard about the accident.

Spearman was walking south, when the vehicle struck him. The SUV also was travelling south on the road.

A portion of the road was closed for several hours while police conducted an investigation of the crash site.

An autopsy on Spearman’s body is scheduled for Tuesday.
