Plane with smoke in cockpit diverted to Darke Co.

An airplane on its way from Michigan to Kentucky this afternoon had smoke in its cockpit and had to be diverted to the Darke County Airport.

Darke County officials were alerted at 4:20 p.m. that the Cessna was smoking, and that it was approaching the airport on Ohio 121.

The plane was able to land safely, and none of the three people aboard were hurt, said Chief Bob Frey of the Versailles Fire Department.

A belt broke in the engine compartment, which caused the cockpit to fill with smoke, Frey said. There was no damage to the plane.
