TROY — A driver who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol crashed into the cruiser of a state trooper who was investigating a separate crash on I-75 in Miami County Tuesday morning, according to investigators.
Cruiser camera footage released Wednesday morning shows the crash happen.
A state trooper was on the scene of a first, unrelated crash, on northbound I-75 north of the state Route 41 exit to Troy before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. State troopers were blocking the left lane of northbound I-75 when an SUV crashed into the cruiser, OSHP Sgt. Jeff Kramer told News Center 7.
A preliminary investigation found the driver of the SUV, Obed Maka, 35, of Sidney, failed to see the lane closed by state troopers and Troy police, and swerved to avoid the Troy cruiser, Kramer said. The SUV then overcorrected and crashed into the back of the state trooper’s cruiser.
Maka was transported to Upper Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
Both the state trooper and Troy police officer were not injured in the crash, Kramer said.
Alcohol impairment by the driver of the SUV is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash, Kramer said.
Maka is due in court next week.
The officer and state trooper were wearing reflective safety vests and had their cruisers' lights on with the crash occurred.
