Early investigation shows an officer was sitting in his car on the phone when a reckless driver pulled into the lot, close to the officer’s vehicle. A man inside the vehicle, Brian Sherer, 34, of Centerville, Indiana, began yelling at the officer, “Kill me, shoot me.”

The officer immediately radioed for assistance and began driving away from Sherer’s vehicle to the other side of the parking lot. A two-man car was nearby and arrived on scene to assist.

The two-man car stopped about 60 feet from the Sherer’s vehicle and the officers got out of their car.

Sherer got out of his vehicle, yelling again, “Shoot me, kill me,” and began stabbing himself with a knife. When officers gave verbal commands, he ran toward them, wielding the knife in a threatening manner. Sherer closed the distance between them, and when he was 10 feet away, one of the officers shot him.

Sherer fell to the ground and officers began administering first aid and called EMS. He was taken to Reid Health Medical Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital with what are believed to be survivable injuries.

No officers were injured in this incident.
