Occupants displaced after fire damages Dayton home

UPDATE @ 4:55 a.m.

Firefighters said two people will be displaced after a fire broke out in their attached garage Saturday morning.

Crews responded to the home in the 4500 block of St. James Avenue and found a garage fully involved in smoke and flames.

Dayton Fire District Chief Peter Whitby said all occupants were able to escape the blaze before crews arrived on scene.

Whitby said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but the cause might have been a mattress on the outside of the structure.

A neighboring house was also damaged in the fire, but damage was limited to melted siding on the side of the house.

Damage was estimated around $12,000 for the main house, while the neighboring home sustained around $3,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported.
