News Center 7 checks in with Huber Heights girl after full year of online learning

HUBER HEIGHTS — Data from the Ohio Department of Education shows, during this pandemic school year, more students opted for online community schools. Enrollment in these types of programs grew by more than 50 percent.

Abby Thompson from Huber Heights is one of the approximately 13,000 new students to enroll in a community school e-school program.

Her parents chose to enroll her in Ohio Connections Academy to allow for more consistency in her school year.

“When she does the same thing over and over again, she thrives. She does very well,” Jacob Thompson, Abby’s father said.

It’s clear this was a system that worked for his daughter. She ended the year with straight As.

“It was fun,” Abby said.

Her favorite subject this year was science.

“We learned about space for a long period of time, so I thought that was really cool,” Abby said.

She missed having friends in her class, but her program allowed her to chat with her friends online.

“She needs the social side of it,” Jacob Thompson said.

That is why next year, Abby will be going to St. Peter School in Huber Heights.
