India COVID-19 Crisis: Miami Valley Indian-American community sends support

Monday, India’s health ministry reported 366,161 new COVID-19 cases and 3,754 new COVID-19 deaths, something the Indian-American community in the Miami Valley is paying close attention to.

“It’s very scary, and it is very sad,” Dr. Sunita Agarwal, a board member for Hindu Temple of Dayton said.

She and her husband, Dr. Anil Agarwal, are originally from India. They have lived in the United States for almost 40 years, most of that in Dayton. Now, they are monitoring the COVID-19 situation in their home country.

Hindu Temple of Dayton has devoted six weeks of a group prayer to the people in India.

“The idea is that this sends vibrations of good health, wellbeing, taking away fear of dying, and giving people strength,” Dr. Agarwal said.

In India, beds, oxygen, and medical workers are in short supply. Some COVID-19 patients are dying in waiting rooms our outside overwhelmed clinics before getting to see a doctor.

“I’ve heard from some friends that their family members back home are in ICU and some of them unfortunately didn’t make it,” Dr. Agarwal said.

They Agarwals explained, through various medical and religious organizations, the Indian-American community in the Miami Valley is working to send money and medical supplies to India, as well as provide telehealth services.

“That actually helps us feel better that in some way, even though we are remote, we are involved, we are able to help, we are praying for them,” Dr. Agarwal said.

The resources they are sending abroad, come as they are providing comfort and prayer to grieving friends in the Miami Valley.
